In the original document platen of this invention, two holding elements arranged at a distance from each other are provided along one of the sides of the glass plate. They act to increase the strength of the glass and to hold the covering plate on the glass plate. The guiding elements are arranged on each side of the copying apparatus in such a manner that they can receive the glass plate and the holding elements and enable their to and fro movement. A guiding element receives one edge of the glass, while the other guiding element receives the holding element. To carry out a copying process, the glass plate and the holding elements are moved to and fro in and along the guiding elements.
