In a device for coding a video signal, particularly in accordance with the DPCM method, in which quantisation is effected with controllable characteristic and the quantised signal is conducted via a buffer store and in which, furthermore, no quantised signals are generated with changes in the video signal which are below a threshold value, the threshold value and the quantisation characteristic are controlled in dependence on the loading of the buffer store.
