Components (4) are monitored by an ultra sonic signal transmitter (6) that produces a reflected signal that is received (7) and amplified (8) before conversion to a digital form for evaluation (10). The echo signal obtained is typically in the form of an impulse that characterises the part. The identification takes place in the form of a learning process over a number of cycles and is used as a reference in a digital memory (2). The signals generated are subjected to Fourier transformation to provide data for comparison. Periodic checks are made on the signal trends in order to allow compensation for drift to be made.
