A computer-controlled scanner for measuring potential differences and conductivities in electrolytes of electrophoresis systems uses random, computer-controlled access to pairs of adjacent detection electrodes of a detection unit. The electrodes are arranged in rows parallel to the electrical field lines and are controlled individually and in groups via relays. Measurements are made esp. at an optional position on the sepn. surfaces of equipment for carrier-free electrophoresis and in regions matched to the potential differences and conductivities encountered.
