In the electro-magnetic casting process for continuously cast metal strip (40), of Al (alloy), the hydrostatic pressure of the metal sump (36) in the hardening zone of the mould(s) (26) is lowered independently of the supply of molten metal (10) in the feed vessel (14) for the molten metal. The induction current to maintain the balance between the magnetic pressure and the hydrostatic pressure is adjusted and controlled as required. The hydrostatic pressure is pref. reduced to a value of up to 100 mbar, and pref. 5-20 mbar. The metal is poured into the mould(s) (26) with no free meniscus. The metal is cast vertically upwards, where the metal level in the feed vessel (14) is higher than the uppermost part (T) of the hardening zone (34) of the metal sump (36) in the mould (26), which generates a hydrostatic pressure at the hardening zone (34) of the sump (36). The molten metal levels are measured without contact, pref. through an eddy current or a laser sensor. ADVANTAGE - The system give a friction-free and problem-free casting of strip material, esp. of 5-20 mm.
