New 2,2-disubstituted pentane-1,5-diamines of formula H2N-(CH2)3-C(R1)(R2)-CH2NH2 (I) (in which R1 and R2 independently = 1-10C alkyl or 2-10C alkenyl or R1 and R2 together form a 4-7C alkylene chain which is opt. substd. by 1-5 1-4C alkyl gps), are prepd. from 2,2-disubstituted 4-cyano-butanals of formula NC-(CH2)2-C(R1)(R2)-CH=O (II) by (a) reacting the (II) in a first reaction chamber with excess ammonia over an a acidic heterogeneous catalyst at temps. of 20-150 deg.C and a pressure of 15-500 bar, and (b) hydrogenating the reaction prods. in a second reaction chamber with hydrogen in the presence of excess ammonia over Co-, Ni-, Ru- and/or other noble metal contg. catalysts, opt. with basic components or on basic or neutral carriers, at temps. of 60-150 deg. C and a press. of 50-500 bar. Pref. in (I) R1 and R2 are both both Me. Claimed cpds. (I) are 2-methyl-2-n-propyl- pentane-1,5-diamine (Ia), 2-n-butyl-2-ethyl-pentane-1,5-diamine (Ib) and 2-n-propyl-2-n-propyl-pentane-1,5-diamine (Ic).
