<p>A centralizer (10) for the stem (14) of a cementable prosthetic orthopedic implant (12) that is implanted into the medullary canal of a bone (18) has a hollow annular body (20) with a tapered interior surface (15) for receiving a tapered stem (14) of the implant (12). The centralizer (10) has four fins (22) spaced around the exterior surface of its annular body (20) with the fins (22) extending radially outwardly in a direction generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis extending along the stem (14) in a proximal-distal direction. The annular body (20) of the centralizer (10) has a proximal (24) and a distal (26) end surface spaced a predetermined distance apart with the fins (22) having a base adjacent the body (20) extending over a substantial portion of the predetermined distance. Adjacent fins (22) are preferably offset from neighbouring fins (22) in a proximal-distal direction so that when the proximal-distal dimension of the annular body (20) is maintained, it generates a wavelike structure for the centralizer body (20).</p> |
