PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the dark current generated in a vertical registor when a signal charge is accumulated, and to obtain an excellent S-N ratio by providing a junction gate and the like which is coupled to an image pickup part containing the first vertical CCD registor, an accumulation part containing the second vertical CCD registor and a vertical CCD registor. SOLUTION: The image pickup element is provided with an image pickup part 1, containing the first vertical CCD registor 3-1, which is connected to a photodiode 1 through a transfer gate 2 and driven by the first 4-phase pulsesϕV11 toϕV14 . Also, a storage part M, containing the second vertical CCD registor 3-2 which is driven by the second 4-phase pulsesϕVM1 toϕVM4 , and a horizontal CCD registor 4, which receives a signal electromagnetic waves from the storage part M and transfers it in row direction, are provided therein. Besides, a junction gate 6, which is connected to the vertical CCD registor of the continuous two electrodes of the four electrode vertical CCD registor of a cycle, is provided. As a result, the signal charge, which is photoelectricaly converted, is transferred and accumulated to the junction gate of the storage part M at high speed, and a dark current can be suppressed.
