Method for handling primarily timber logs 2, in which the logs 2, as in a saw inlet, are conveyed essentially transversely to their longitudinal direction, for example by means of conveyor chains 3 running across the longitudinal direction of the logs, and one by one are transferred and fed onto a longitudinal conveyor 5, by means of which the logs 2 are individually fed, the transfer being performed so that a predetermined interval is created between two succeeding logs 2, in which each log 2 is fed on to the longitudinal conveyor 5 at a point in time, which is selected on the basis of information regarding the longitudinal position of one end 10 of the last log fed on to the longitudinal conveyor, and the log that is next in turn to be fed on to the longitudinal conveyor. The method is especially characterised in that the longitudinal position, preferably of the leading end 7 of each log 2, viewed in the conveying direction of the longitudinal conveyor 5, is determined by proximity sensing before it is fed on to the longitudinal conveyor 5 and preferably when it is standing next in turn to be fed on to the longitudinal conveyor, by means of laser beams 8, ultrasonic waves 8 or the like, which are made to strike the said end 7 essentially in the longitudinal direction of the log 2, reflected beams or waves being detected by essentially known methods, and the distance between the source 6 of the beams or the waves and the said end 7 being determined by likewise essentially known methods.
