The present disclosure provides media and methods for the selective enumeration of sublethally injured microorganisms, as specifically exemplified by Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli O157:H7. A thin layer of nonselective solid growth medium is layered over selective solid growth medium, with the choices of the overlayer (about 3 to about 14 ml for a 8.5 cm petri plate) and selective agars (about 25 to about 30 ml) being dependant on the target to be enumerated. The sample containing the injured bacteria is then inoculated onto the surface of the thin nonselective overlayer, the plates are incubated and then colonies are counted.
|
