PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To Ensure a reliable start-up and a reliable operation of an internal combustion engine under all operating conditions by properly increasing a fuel quantity supplied to a high-pressure pump under a desired operating condition, by means of another electrically driven feed pump. SOLUTION: This fuel supply system has a feed pump 12 mechanically driven by the internal combustion engine 10, and the feed pump feeds fuel from a fuel tank 14 to the high-pressure pump 16, which in turn feeds the fuel under high pressure to injection positions 22 of the internal combustion engine 10 at least indirectly. In addition to the mechanically driven feed pump, another feed pump 30 is provided to feed fuel from the fuel tank 14 to the high-pressure pump 16. The other feed pump has an electric drive 32 and is driveable independently of the mechanically driven feed pump 12.
