PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform, by which the glass preform diameter can reach a stable condition quickly, the effective part after being vitrified can be made longer, and accordingly, the manufacturing cost can be reduced, in a deposition process of glass fine particles by a VAD method. SOLUTION: A starting member 1 used in the VAD method is composed of a columnar main part 1A and a tip end part 1B projected in a warhead shape from the tip part of the main part 1A. The starting member 1 is characterized in that when the outer diameter of the main part 1A and the length of the part 1B projected from the main part 1A are defined as a and b, respectively, the value of b/a is set to be≥0.5.
