PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To print a worthy printed matter met to a selection object by enabling selection of either layout checking or printing quality checking when an ink residual amount becomes small to an ink consumption amount of a printing page, and to prevent a useless ink discarded without being used in printing by controlling to such an optimum density that a remaining ink is exactly used after the page end by taking balance between the ink consumption amount and the ink residual amount into consideration. SOLUTION: Before printing of the page, the ink consumption amount necessary for printing of the page is calculated from image data and a spare ejection ink amount. If the ink residual amount is smaller than the ink consumption amount, an operator is notified of it to select whether to continue or stop printing. In the case of further continuing printing, the operator is made to select a method of printing by a normal density up to exhaustion of the ink or a method of printing by thinning out the image data so that the ink residual amount may become zero at the time of the end of printing of the page.
