A vacuum pump comprising a lubricant supply system 218 and a lubricant transfer device 228 provided on a rotor shaft 152, wherein the lubricant supply system comprises a lubricant reservoir 222, 224 and a wicking element 220 having a surface engaging a surface of the lubricant reservoir, an inner periphery, an outer periphery and a finger 258 projecting from the element to engage the lubricant transfer device, wherein the element has at least one edge with at least one cut-out so that said surface of the element has a total surface area that is less than that of said surface of the lubricant reservoir. Preferably the at least one cut-out defines a flow path between first and second portions of the lubricant reservoir. The lubricant reservoir and wicking element preferably have aligned central apertures defining a passage to receive the rotor shaft. The cut-outs restrict the flow of lubricant into the wicking element and therefore allow the flow rate of lubricant through the wicking element to be controlled. |
