Disclosed herein are methods of inactivating and/or decolonizing bacteria on a surface. The present invention also discloses methods for treatment of epithelial conditions caused or aggravated by bacteria, such as acne vulgaris, in a subject in need thereof. The present invention additionally discloses inventive compounds and compositions that exhibit anti-bacterial and/or anti-inflammatory effects.

1. A method comprising steps of:
administering an anti-bacterial agent to a subject suffering from acne vulgaris caused or aggravated by Propionibacterium acnes, said anti-bacterial agent comprising an effective amount of a compound represented by the formula:or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof;
wherein the effective amount of the compound exhibits an anti-bacterial activity, which results in an IC50 against Propionibacterium acnes of between 0.5 μg/mL and about 300 μg/mL.
