摘要 786,741. Rot-proofing standing wooden posts. SOMMER, J. June 29, 1954 [July 6, 1953; Oct. 31, 1953], No. 19066/54. Class 140. Standing wooden posts are preserved from rotting by applying wood-impregnating media to the free end of the post by means of a device having a handle for raising to the top of the post a wood-impregnating medium held by the device. As shown, a long steel tubing handle 2 carries detachably, by means of a tapered pin 41, at its upper crooked end 3 a ball joint 40 which is secured to a plate 16. Guide-rods 17, 18 are pivotally connected at 19, 20 to a pair of semicircular flaps 7, 8 hinged together at 9, and guide-rods 12, 13 are pivotally connected to sleeves 10, 11 on the hinge pintle. The guide-rods pass through the plate 16, rods 17, 18 having retaining nuts 23, 24, and the parts are urged to the position shown by springs 14, 15, 21, 22 surrounding the rods. In use, a sheet of creped filter paper is stuck at intervals to the under-faces 43 of the flaps 7, 8 and the rot-preventing medium 6 in paste form is applied to this paper sheet to which it adheres. Instead of a paste the rot-proofing substance may be crystals in a water-permeable envelope or a block stuck to the paper and coated with adhesive on its post-contacting face. When the rot-proofing substance is applied to the top of the post it adheres more strongly to the post than the paper does to the flaps so that the rotproofing substance covered by a paper sheet remains on top of the post. If the post has a gabled top, the applicator is applied to it with the hinge along the ridge when the flaps 7, 8 move against the slant faces on compressing the springs 14, 15. In a modification for use with posts having conical ends, the flaps 7, 8 are replaced by four segmental conical members each provided with springs urging them together and they are maintained extended substantially coplanar, for application of the rot-proofing substance to them, by means of a cap which is freely suspended from the frame of the applicator and retains the bent-up apical extensions of the conical members, a pin depending from the cap engaging the apex of the post to free them from it. In an alternative arrangement, the applicator comprises a holder detachable from the handle for retaining a leather bag containing sponge rubber discs, two of which may be apertured to permit deformation to conform to the end of the post, a filter paper carrying the rotproofing substance being stuck at intervals to the bag.
