Aluminium or an aluminium alloy for use in the production of alkyl aluminium compounds, is activated by heating with an aluminium alkoxide of the formula: (R1)(R2)Al-Y (where R1 and R2 are alkoxy and/or alkyl and Y is alkoxy). The aluminium alkoxide is heat-stable to 250 deg.C in contrast to the alkyl aluminium compounds, the aryl aluminium compounds, the alkyl beryllium compounds aluminium hydride and calcium hydride previously used as activators, and consequently the activation need not be effected under hydrogen pressure. Sufficient activation is produced by heating for e.g. 30 minutes at 190 deg.C or 3 hours at 100 deg.C.
