Phosphorus nitride mfr. from phosphorus halides and ammonia - the product being used for fire-proofing textile fibres

The prepn. of phosphorus nitrides with the general formula PNx, where X lies between 0.9 and 1.7, by the reaction of phosphorus halides with ammonia and heating the reaction product obtd. The novelty is that the reaction is undertaken in the gaseous phase using an excess of NH3 w.r.t. the phosphorus halides, the reaction product then being heated to max. 950 degrees C. so that NH3 ceases to be evolved. The reaction is pref. undertaken between the b.pt. or sublimation pt. of the halide and 250 degrees C., subsequent heating being pref. at 500-950 degreesC., esp. 600-800 degrees C. The process is pref. used to make colourless nitrides with a compsn. similar to P3N5, starting from PCl5. Esp. to mfr. cpds. with compsn. similar to P3N5 for the fire-proofing of fibres for textile materials, e.g. cellulose fibres. Ac economic method of mfg. colourless products which do not have an undesirable odour.
