<p>The castor is mounted on a horizontal axle about a middle vertical shaft (12) which is hollow, and contains a central shaft (14) attached to the furniture. The bottom end of the central shaft presses onto a transverse bar (20) with brake pads (22) on the top edge. The bar is pressed upwards by a spring (36) inside the hollow shaft, and extends out of the shaft via slots (28). As the weight is taken off the furniture the suspension extends and the brake pads engage the inside faces of moulded brake drums (33) inside the castors. The whole system does not take up any more space than unbraked castors.</p> |
