PURPOSE:To prepare a catalyst leaving a catalytic characteristic which graphite has and being completely free from dust generation by immersing acid-treated graphite in an aqueous solution of nitrates, heating after drying to obtain the expanded graphite on which metallic corpuscles is dispersed and deposited, and press-molding it. CONSTITUTION:Acid treated graphite is immersed in an aqueous solution of nitrates of Ni, Pt or the like and heated in an atmosphere at 400-900 deg.C after drying. The acid treated graphite is expanded and at the same time, above- described metallic corpuscles are dispersed and deposited on the surface of said graphite. The expanded graphite is press-molded to a desired shape such as sheets. In this catalyst, a chemically stable property which graphite has is maintained as it is and the specific surface area can be increased by approximately 10-100 times. Furthermore, the catalyst is completely free from the dust generation as with a conventional graphite-molded material and the reaction rate is remarkably increased.
