Instant firelighter comprising a body (1) which can burn for several minutes, consisting of a compact mass (3) of wood powder and wax (pref. paraffin wax) powder, and a wick (2) for lighting the body (1). The wick is, e.g., of natural textile fibre such as cotton. Pref., the wick extends through the body of the firelighter and protrudes from both ends. The firlighter compsn. (3) may also contain crushed aromatic herbs such as thyme, bay leaves, etc., in which case the firelighter also emits a fragrance as it burns. A claimed firelighter compsn. comprises 48% food grade paraffin wax, 48% sawdust, 3% crushed aromatic herbs and 1% cotton wick. USE/ADVANTAGE - The firelighters are cheap to make, safe and clean to use, easy to light and remain burning for long periods. They are useful for lighting barbecues, fire grates, etc.
