Compatible television system with auxiliary carrier

An NTSC compatible EDTV wide screen system comprises three components: (1) a main component containing centre panel information and low frequency side panel information; (2) an auxiliary component containing high frequency side panel information; (3) an auxiliary component containing very high frequency luminance component information. The components 2 and 3 are transmitted as a double single side band signal with suppressed carrier, in which signal the component 2 exclusively takes up one of the upper and lower side bands and the component 3 takes up the other side band. <IMAGE>
