To produce an optic fibre, drawn from a glass blank heated above its softening temp., it is drawn from the end of the blank together with a laminar gas flow in the fibre vicinity. The temp. change from the glass softening temp. to the fibre temp. follows a flattened temp. gradient. Also claimed is an appts. with a drawing kiln, to heat the blank and draw out the glass fibre from one end, with an insert at the fibre drawing end of the kiln containing one or more concentric muffle tubes. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method is for mfg. optic fibres drawn from a heated glass blank. The technique eliminates adverse effects such a air turbulence within the kiln, or sharp temp. drops in the glass material, to give a high quality and low-fault optic fibre.
