A fuel cell assembly has a two-phase pressure compensation system for maintaining a fuel cell stack (2) under a constant predetermined pressure. Fuel cell assembly comprises a fuel cell stack (2) located between pressure plates (4, 5) and which is separated from one or each of the pressure plates by a compensator comprising a bellows (30) filled with a pressurized first phase-forming gas for maintaining the stack under a predetermined pressure. A compensation vessel, which is thermally insulated from the stack and which is coupled by a connection line to the bellows (30), contains a part of the gas, communicating with the bellows via the connection line, and a second phase in equilibrium with the gas. Preferred Features: The compensation vessel is thermally insulated and is maintained at a constant temperature, especially ambient temperature or an elevated temperature maintained by a heater. The fuel cell stack is contained in a gas-tight enclosure (3, 4, 5), the compensation vessel being located outside the enclosure. The second phase is the liquid phase of the gas in the bellows or is a sorbed phase of the gas, the sorbed phase being adsorbed or chemisorbed on an active carbon or zeolite sorbent. The gas consists of or contains an inert gas, especially nitrogen. |
