OPTICAL ACTIVE MATRIX AND ITS PRODUCTION

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical active matrix of a low loss suitable for gradation expression without malfunction by using an optical waveguide partitioned at the boundary between a transparent substrate and an optical waveguide layer with a metallic film, thereby preventing the malfunction by external light, such as back light of liquid crystal display and illuminating light, and the adverse influence of an increase in off current, etc. CONSTITUTION:Many groove parts are formed on the surface of a glass substrate 101 and the optical waveguide 102 of a staircase refractive index type are formed in these groove parts. The metallic film 105 for shielding the external light from the rear surface of the glass substrate 101 is formed over the entire surface of the groove parts. Window parts 113 disposed on clad layer 117 formed on the surface of the glass substrate 101 and the surfaces of the optical waveguide 102 are formed as the window part 113 to introduce light to a photoconductive material 106 in the upper part of the core 103 of the optical waveguide 102 of the staircase refractive index type. The incident light on the core part 103 of the optical waveguide 102 propagates while repeating total reflection. The light from the outside is shielded by providing the boundary between such transparent substrate 101 and the optical waveguide 102 with the metallic film 105.
