PURPOSE:To increase recording speed and to prolong the life of a photoreceptor by shortening the time required for starting up a recording operation. CONSTITUTION:A laser driving circuit 46 is provided with a function for detecting the intensity of a laser beam 41 emitted from the laser diode of a semiconductor laser package 42 and performing APC for controlling the intensity of the emitted light from the laser diode so that the detected intensity may be a specified value. Then, a CPU 13 allows the laser driving circuit 46 to perform the APC in the midst of starting up a polygon motor 43 or in the midst of carrying recording paper to a space between the photoreceptor drum 1 and a transfer roller 61 by a paper feeding roller 9 concurrently with such operation.
