Parameter values are stored using a ring memory technique. If an error is detected, the recording of the parameter values is interrupted, and the value of the last usable ring memory storage value is stored in the error memory. The parameter values may include engine speed, injection start time, duration of injection, or injection pressure. An apparatus for controlling a combustion engine is also claimed.
