PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the iris pattern of a testee while contact lens is put on by detecting a shadow area from an iris image signal for the portion of one frame, obtaining a correction iris image signal, executing a feature extracting processing in the image signal and obtaining the iris pattern. SOLUTION: When an individual is recognized by the iris, an illuminating device is turned on in accordance with a turning-on command signal from a photographing control circuit 10 and the eye of the testee is irradiated with an illumination light from the diagonally left direction of the eye. Then the eye of the testee is photographed in accordance with a shutter signal by a camera 3 and the obtained image signal is supplied to an iris extracting circuit 4. In the circuit, the area with luminance being lower than the prescribed one is detected from the iris image signal as the shadow area and the signal obtained by removing only the signal corresponding to the shadow area from the iris image signal is obtained as the correction iris image signal. The feature extracting processing is executed concerning the correction iris image signal so that the iris pattern is obtained.
