PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode and a negative electrode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, having high discharge capacity and an excellent cycle life. SOLUTION: A negative electrode is manufactured using a material which comprises alloy particles having 0.1-50 μm of average particle size and containing an Si phase particle 40, and a solid solution or an intermetallic compound phase (for example, NiSi2 phase 41), for surrounding the particle 40, of Si and other element selected from the group comprising 2A group elements, transition elements, 3B group elements and 4B group elements in the periodic table, and in which a content of the Si phase particles 40 is 5-99 wt.%. The alloy particle is prepared by quenching-solidifying (for example, atomizing, roll-quenching) a fusion containing Si and other element, or by conducting heat-treatment after other element is deposited on Si powder by electrodeless plating or mechanical alloying. A negative electrode material excellent in discharge capacity and a cycle life is provided in the case of the quenching-solidification without heat-treatment. |
