A positive authentication of an owner of a portable article and payment using the authentication are implemented. A portable article (101) includes portable phones and cards of various types. An owner registers in advance settling partner information and an authenticating password with an authentication control center (112) and receives and keeps intrinsic information. Intrinsic information is locally stored in a portable phone but a password is not. When making a payment, an owner displays the intrinsic information on a portable phone in the form of bar codes for reading by the input/output means (151) of a POS terminal, and keys in a password on the keyboard (153) of the POS terminal. An authentication processing center (113) confirms a combination of these two elements of information for authentication of an owner to complete a settling process. Intrinsic information may be changed periodically.
