Device comprises a passive imager (1) that supplies images of space (I), a detector (2) for detection of space debris (6) present within the space images and determining the paths (TD) of such debris, a locator (3) for determining the distances (DDS) to such debris relative to the satellite and a classifying device for classing each piece of debris according to the product of its Alberto and its apparent surface area. The invention also relates to a utilization of a space debris measurement device for calibration of theoretical models for the distribution of space debris in the range from 100 microns to 10 cm and to a collision detector to be carried by a space satellite.
