An electroluminescent device has an anode, a layer of a rare earth electroluminescent compound and a cathode in which the anode is silicon, preferably there is a layer of a hole transmitting material between the anode and the electroluminescent compound and a layer of an electron transmitting material between the electroluminescent compound and the silicon cathode.
