A process of liquid phase nitration of aromatic compounds using a solid acid catalyst, said process comprising: Refluxing a solution of an aromatic compound and the solid acid catalyst in an organic solvent under nitrogen atmosphere at a temperature in the range of 80-110° C. for period of 1 hour followed by drop wise addition of 30-98% HNO3 with removal of water formed during the reaction azeotropically; wherein said solid acid catalyst is tungsten oxide (WO3) supported on mesoporous silica having BET surface area in the range of 367 to 397 m2/g and the boiling point of said organic solvent is in the range of 80-110° C. and the organic solvent is acetonitrile, 1,2 dichloroethane or dioxane.
