Films or fibres are produced from a copolymer of (I) 50-98 mole % acrylonitrile, (II) 2-50 mole % of a conj., aromatic olefin, and (II) a small amount of copolymerised maleimide, N-substd. maleimide, or norbornene, or a norbornene derivative. Copolymers with a high acrylonitrile content are rigid, colourless, and non-toxic, and have a high optical clarity and gloss. They are useful for the prodn. of containers for books, and for photographic films. The films are easily coated with suitable thermoplastic coatings for use in sealing, and can also be laminated.
