<p>1295987 Explosive charges USM CORP 14 May 1970 [15 May 1969] 23318/70 Heading C1D [Also in Division C3] A moisture-resistant explosive charge comprises a mass of nitrocellulose particles coated with an alkyl substituted diphenyl amine having the formula R 1 C 6 H 4 NHC 6 H 4 R 2 where R 1 is hydrogen or alkyl, R 2 is alkyl, and the R 1 and R 2 radicals together contain 8 to 40 carbon atoms. The amount of amine may be 0À1-5% by weight of the nitrocellulose; many suitable amines are listed. A suspension of nitrocellulose particles in water may be mixed with an organic solution of the amine and the coated nitrocellulose separated; ethyl alcohol is the preferred organic solvent, but others are referred to. Alternatively nitrocellulose pellets may be coated by dipping or spraying. Resistance to moisture may be improved by heating the coated particles to melt the amine. The coated particles may be pressed into pellets for use in tools for driving nail s into masonry; alternatively the nitrocellulose may be made into high explosive charges. Other optional ingredients of the explosive charges are dyestuffs, fillers such as carbon black, stabilisers such as diethyl diphenyl urea or hydroquinone monobenzyl ether, binders such as polyvinyl alcohol, and ignition and burning agents such as tricresyl phosphate.</p> |
