In known encryption systems based on one-way function keys, there is no facility for identification or authentication of partner stations. To make up for this deficiency, an identification key (ID) is agreed and stored at both ends in the initial connection set-up between two stations. This identification key is subsequently always co-used as an additional encryption key for encryption/decryption. The identification key (ID) is preferably generated in fully automatic and random fashion and is transmitted in cryptologically secured form. As an appropriate special case, a first one-way function key is itself used as an identification key. <IMAGE>
