PURPOSE:To shorten the time required to measure the performance of a printer and reduce the load of a worker by a method wherein the number of lines printed per minute LPM and the number of characters printed per second CPS and the like in printing are automatically measured. CONSTITUTION:In a serial printer 2, the characters belonging to the predetermined kind of characters are continuously printed by the maximum number of columns (m) and a plurality of the predetermined lines (n) so as to measure the time T1 required for printing with a measuring device 6 in order to obtain the number of lines printed per minute LPM by calculating nX60/T1 through the measured time T1 and the number of lines (n). Further, by continuously printing the characters of an adequate number of columns (l), which is less than (m) columns, and (n) lines, the time T2 required for printing is measured with the measuring device 6 so as to calculate n(m-l)/T1-T2 through the time T2, the number of columns (l), the number of lines (n), the time T1, which is measured for obtaining LPM, the number of columns (m) and the number of lines (n), in order to obtain the number of characters per second CPS. The obtained performance data are displayed on a display 5 or printed out. |
