摘要 <p>PURPOSE: To obtain a bright image without the loss of light quantity by making light pass only through a polarizing beam splitter by specified constitution. CONSTITUTION: The polarizing beam splitter PBS 701 reflects 1st linearly polarized light and has characteristic by which 2nd linearly polarized light orthogonal to the 1st linearly polarized light is transmitted. In such a case, light source light 702 is made incident on the PBS 701 and the 1st linearly polarized light reflected on the PBS 701 is made incident on a liquid crystal electrooptical device 703. The incident light is modulated by the device 703. The PBS 701 being a means for detecting outgoing light outgoing from the device 703 transmits the linearly polarized light deviated by 90 deg. from the case it is made incident. The transmitted light 704 is projected by a projection optical system 705. By using a reflection type display mode, a wiring and an MIM element are set under a picture element electrode. As a result, the rate of the picture element electrode to the area of a picture element is largely secured.</p>
