<p>A sound management module executes independently of a multimedia application and serves requests for generating sounds for presentation as part of a multimedia display. To generate and play a desired sound, the multimedia application requests that the sound mangement module generate and play the sound (506). To formulate the request, the multimedia application determines a number of characteristics of the desired sound (502, 504). Such characteristics can include, for example, (i) component sounds which are to be concatenated to form the desired sound, (ii) a duration of a period of silence to be included between the components sounds, and (iii) sound wave characteristics of synthesized sounds. When the request is received, the sound management module creates the desired sound in accordance with the specified characteristics included in the request (512). The sound management module can be created using general purpose computer programming languages and is not limited to the particular multimedia authoring tool.</p> |
