PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase transition type optical recording medium in which good recording and reproducing characteristics are obtd. for high-density recording, especially for recording with <=0.6 μm shortest mark length and <=0.7 μm track pitch, and to provide an optical recording method to realize a high transfer rate in this high-density recording medium. SOLUTION: The recording layer 4 has 10 to 18 nm thickness dr and the first dielectric layer 31 consists of m layers (wherein m is an integer >1) of unit dielectric layers. In the i-th unit dielectric layer from the base body 2, the refractive index ni at the wavelength λ of recording and reproducing light, thickness di, and the refractive index nr in the crystal state of the recording layer 4 at the wavelength λ, satisfy the relation of the formula.
