PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller capable of ensuring the control accuracy of an air fuel ratio in the rich spike control, and inhibiting the deterioration of the exhaust emission, in an internal combustion engine capable of switching its combustion configuration. SOLUTION: The stoichiometic combustion operation is forcibly executed every time when an accumulated traveling distance of an automobile is advanced by a distance d, and the learning opportunity of an air fuel ratio learning value KG (i) in an area of the rich spike control is prepared. Whereby the learning of the learning value KG (i) can be properly executed to control the air fuel ratio learning value KG (i) to a value corresponding to the shift to a proper value of the air fuel ratio. The air fuel ratio can be controlled to the proper value (for example, [12]) on the basis of the air fuel ratio learning value KG (i) with high accuracy in rich combustion in accompany with the rich spike control.
