PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface treatment method for aluminum or aluminum alloys which is capable of improving corrosion resistance without subjecting the aluminum or aluminum alloys to chromate treatment. SOLUTION: A film containing metal is formed on the surface of the aluminum or aluminum alloy by subjecting the surface to chemical conversion treatment using a solution containing metal ions of zirconium, or the like (a chemical conversion treatment process step). The aluminum or aluminum alloy formed with the chemical conversion treatment is then post-treated by using a solution containing a mercapto compound, or the like (a post-treatment process step). In the case of the aluminum alloy, the aluminum alloy is subjected to the surface treatment with an acid solution containing metal, ions, such as tervalent iron ions, capable of removing copper (a pretreatment process step).
