PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for synthesizing highly pureα,α,α',α'-tetrachloro-p-xylene. SOLUTION: This method for synthesizing highly pureα,α,α',α'-tetrachloro-p-xylene comprises the first reaction step for reacting terephthaldicarboxyaldehyde with a mixture of SOCl<SB>2</SB>with dimethylformaldehyde (DMF) to obtain theα,α,α',α'-tetrachloro-p-xylene as a main component and the 4-dichloromethylbenzaldehyde as a by-product, the second reaction step for adding SOCl<SB>2</SB>and DMF to the produced mixture, and the step for bringing the produced mixture into contact with water, preferably cooled water, to obtain the highly pureα,α,α',α'-tetrachloro-p-xylene having purity of 90 to 99 mol. %.
