PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a moving image which is large in movement amount from deteriorating in picture quality resulting from motion compensation type frame rate conversion (FRC) processing. SOLUTION: An image display device includes an FRC unit 10 which converts the number of frames of an input image signal by interpolating a motion-compensated image signal in between frames of the input image signal, a motion amount judgement unit 14 which judges whether a motion amount between frames of the input image signal is larger than a prescribed value, and a control unit 15. The FRC unit 10 comprises a motion vector detector 11e which detects a motion vector between the frames of the input image signal, an interpolation vector evaluating unit 11f which allocates an interpolation vector between the frames based upon the motion vector, and an interpolation frame generator 12d which generates an interpolation frame from the interpolation vector. The control unit 15 changes the interpolation vector to 0 vector continuously for a period of several subsequent frames as to a pixel whose motion amount between the frames of the input image signal is larger than a prescribed value or an area including the pixel to invalidate the motion compensation processing by the FRC unit 10.
