A method of inhibiting an ethylene response in a field crop, the method comprising applying to at least one portion of at least one plant of said field crop an amount of an aqueous solution of a water soluble salt of 3-(1-cyclopropenyl-propanoic acid having a formulaeffective to produce inhibition of an ethylene response in said at least one plant, wherein M is Na, and wherein said inhibition of an ethylene response is manifested by a difference chosen from the group consisting of (a) increase in the yield; (b) decrease in the rate of petiole abscission; (c) decrease in the rate of leaf chlorophyll content degradation; (d) delay in the senescence of the flag leaf; (e) delay in the senescence of the green organs of the spike and ears; and (f) any combination of the above, said difference being measured relative to an untreated plant in which said ethylene response is not inhibited.
