The control element (2) has a sensor arrangement (S1) for detecting a hand near the control element with a sensing module that emits a detection signal and a receiving module for the signal. The system detects the presence of a hand for operating the control element from the presence or absence of a receiver signal. The receiver is connected to a controller that activates the illumination device when a hand is detected near the control element.
