A wireless device 10 has a WiFiRTM transceiver 18 and a Wireless Wide Area Network WWAN transceiver 22. A programmed processor is configured to connect the WiFi transceiver to an Access Point AP and while connected, operate in a learning mode (102 figure 2, 304 figure 4) in which WWAN signals are characterised at a location of the WiFi access point and stored as an AP characterization. When a connection to the AP is lost (308), operating in a monitoring mode (312) in which WWAN signals are compared to the stored access point characterisation with the WiFi transceiver disabled. When the WWAN signals match the WiFi AP characterization (316) the WiFi transceiver is enabled to reconnect to a WiFi AP. The WiFi AP characterisation comprises a table of WWAN cell minimum and maximum signal strengths RSSI detected for each cell while the WiFi transceiver is connected to the access point in the learning mode. For controlling the WiFi communication circuitry in a manner that minimises unnecessary power consumption by the WiFi circuitry so as to extend battery life of device 10. |
