Bituminous concrete contains a calcined bauxite aggregate (21) of high accelerated polishing coefficient. A bituminous concrete comprises aggregate (2), fines (3) and a binder (4), at least part of the aggregate consisting of calcined bauxite (21) having an accelerated polishing coefficient of /-0.65. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a road having a surface layer of the above bituminous concrete; and (ii) production of a road surface layer from the above bituminous concrete. Preferred Features: The calcined bauxite may be grey or yellow bauxite and the binder may be pure bitumen or a modified bitumen. e.g. Sacerflex (RTM).
