<PICT:1124483/C1/1> A glass melting and refining furnace has an inner compartment 8 separated from an outer compartment 9 by a wall 5 the top of which is normally covered by the melt. An outlet 19 at the bottom of the inner compartment leads to a delivery channel 18. A rotary motion of the melt is provided by burners delivering obliquely on to or into the glass in the outer compartment. The glass temperature is maintained uniform by cooling the central portion of the glass surface by withdrawing hot gases from above it, blowing cold air on to it, mounting a water-cooled plate above it by forming a "nappe" of the glass batch on the surface or by arranging the central part of the furnace roof to transmit heat more readily than the peripheral part. An antechamber may be used to melt the raw batch, which may be preheated in a shaft rising from the antechamber. A number of outlets may each feed a different channel. |
