SUBSTANCE: described is method of preparing partially fluorinated benzoic acid by reductive defluorination of pentafluorobenzoic acid in the presence of zinc or magnesium reducing agent and metal complex catalyst such as nickel or cobalt compound with ligands, e.g. aryl and alkyl phosphines, nitrogen- containing heterocyclic compounds selected from 2,2- bipyridyl, 1,10-pheneanthroline or phthalocyanine in aprotic dipolar solvent at 35-80 C in the presence of proton sources such as water, acids, ammonium salts at molar ratio of catalyst to pentafluorobenzoic acid of 0.01-0.05 and reducing agent to substrate of 3-10.
